Start from a job you actually do

Pick Plumbing when you set up the app and the common tasks match your work. Each one comes with the steps and hazards already suggested. You check and change them.

Replace an electric hot water system

Replace an electric hot water system at the side of a house.

  1. Check for asbestos (pipe lagging, asbestos cement pipes, flues, covers) before cutting or drilling, and ask for the asbestos register
  2. Isolate the power (licensed electrician) and the water
  3. Drain the old unit
  4. Disconnect and remove it with a trolley
  5. Install and connect the new unit, including the relief valve
  6. Test, then have the power reconnected

  4. Lay and join the pipes
  5. Test the line
  6. Backfill and restore the surface

Fix a leak or blocked drain

Plumbing hazards and controls, ready to check

When the job includes a trench, Gate Ready adds the hazards (trench wall collapse, falling into the excavation, striking underground services, and plant or spoil near the edge) and controls like these. Each one shows its type.

  • AdminUnderground services located (Before You Dig Australia) and marked before digging; potholed by hand near services
  • EngineerWalls 1.5 m deep or more shored, benched or battered before anyone enters (or a geotechnical engineer’s written advice followed)
  • IsolateExcavation edge barricaded; covers over openings when unattended
  • AdminSpoil, materials and plant kept back from the edge
  • AdminSafe access and egress (ladder or ramp) within reach of workers in the trench
  • AdminExcavation inspected before each shift and after rain or any change
  • AdminEmergency procedure for rescue and first aid if someone is engulfed, set up before work starts

A trench or shaft deeper than 1.5 m is on the model national list of high risk construction work, and some states set their own rules, so check your regulator. Sewage and infection risks, noise, sun and heat, and manual handling are suggested for sewer work. Pipe lagging and old pipes can contain asbestos, so the asbestos check comes first. Gate Ready suggests, you review.

Gate Ready hazards and controls screen with a list of controls to tick

Old house? Check for asbestos first.

Pipe lagging, asbestos cement pipes, flues and covers in older houses can contain asbestos. Gate Ready adds a step to check before you cut or drill, and asks when the building was built. Asbestos was banned in Australia from 31 December 2003, so anything built or renovated before 2004 may contain it.

Photograph the trench route and the services

Before you start, take photos of the front, the side passage and the back yard. Then mark up the meters, the relief gully, the trench route, the spoil pile and the exclusion zone, and pin each photo on a site plan to show where it was taken. They print with your SWMS. Photos stay on your phone. We can’t see them.

Common questions from plumbers

What does Gate Ready suggest for trenches?

It suggests controls like locating underground services, shoring or battering deeper trenches and keeping spoil back from the edge. You tick the ones that fit the job and add your own.

Can I mark the water and gas meters and the trench route on my photos?

Yes. Add symbols such as water shut-off valve, gas isolation valve, underground services, excavation edge and exclusion zone, then pin each photo to a site plan. Photos stay on your phone.

Does it cover hot water, drains and gas?

Common tasks cover replacing an electric hot water system, laying a sewer connection and fixing a leak or blocked drain. Pick Gas fitting and Drainage too for gas appliances, storm water drains and manholes.

Does it work in a trench or crawl space with no signal?

Yes, for most of the job. Gate Ready is built for patchy reception. You can draft, sign on and save your PDF without a signal. It checks your subscription when it’s online. If it can’t check for 14 days, you can keep working on SWMS you’ve already started, but you can’t start a new one until it reconnects. Sending a copy needs a connection.

Where are my signed SWMS kept?

They stay on your phone. You export a PDF, and that exported copy is your record.

Does it cover my state?

Yes. It covers all eight Australian states and territories. Always check the result against your job, your site and your regulator.
